“The Art of Racing In the Rain” – Book Review

Wow

“Racers are often called selfish and egotistical. I myself have called race car drivers selfish; I was wrong. To be a champion, you must have no ego at all. You must not exist as  a separate entity. You must give yourself over to the race.”

As said by Enzo, a dog who has the mind of a human.

At first glance, you might think that a novel narrated by a dog might not be heartfelt or might not hold heartfelt sentiments,  but let me tell you, you have a whole other thing coming with this novel.

Nitty Gritty

“The Art of Racing in the Rain,” by Garth Stein tells the story of a man, Denny and his life, from the perspective of his dog Enzo. Through Enzo’s eyes, the reader sees Denny fall in love, get married, have a child and then experience the kind of heartbreak I wouldn’t wish on anyone. At the same time, the reader sees Enzo develop his love of race car driving, through his owner Denny, who starts out as a novice race car driver and develops into something much more.

This novel isn’t just about a life of a man and his dog, it is about the point to which a person can withstand so much heart ache, it seems like there is no where else to fall. It is about the strength that is buried deep inside a person that only the toughest situations will bring out.

“The Art of Racing in the Rain,” had me laughing, picturing what daily activities might look like through a dogs eyes and it had my tearing up, imagining Denny’s heart ache. It also had me cheering for Denny and his unbelievable will to keep going.

This incredible novel was recommended to me by my boyfriend and it honestly took me a while to get to. I kept putting it off and putting it off until I finally said, ok, I’ll read it. I am so happy that he recommended it to me and I honestly feel moved by this novel. I have read a lot of books in my lifetime, but this one really taught me something; it taught me that whenever I feel scared or that I can’t do something, I can. If I feel that I can’t stand up for myself, I can.

Ratings Score

10/10. I cannot recommend this novel enough; it has changed how I view life’s tough situations and made me realize that I can achieve my goals.
